The Jaguars played in the "Let's Play Two" tournament held at Woodbridge HS and Potomac HS over the spring break. The four game tournament was going to be tough due to the multiple games, tough competition and limited pitching.
The Jags opened the tournament at 9:30am on a sunny Saturday and took a big loss with a 17-5 drubbing by the host Woodbridge Vikings. Jack Gutermuth pitched well for the first two innings, recording 5 strikeouts, but the Vikings bats came to life and started combining hits to take a large lead. The Jags fought back with 4 runs in the 5th, but couldn't hold off the Vikings. David Mathis was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead the offense.
In the second game the Jags lost to the powerful Robinson Rams by the score of 17-2. Gary Bornholdt, David Mathis and Jack Gutermuth had the only hits for the Jags. Nick Santos and Ryan Haynes pitched for the Jags.
The third game took place on Monday, where the Jags faced Stonewall Jackson. This was an extremely competitive game with the Raiders coming out on top 2-1. Kevin Moore pitched an absolutely fantastic game, going 4 innings, 2 hits, 2 unearned runs with one strikeout. Ryan Haynes threw the last two innings allowed 1 hit and had 1 strikeout, no runs. There were six Jags that had hits, but left 7 men on base in a close game.
The final game of the tournament was at Potomac Senior High School against a conference foe, the Thomas Jefferson Colonials. The Jags were missing 5 players due to vacation plans, while the Colonials showed up with only 9 players, also due to vacation plans. The Jags took and early 7-2 lead, let the Colonials back in the game with a 4 run 5th, but the Jags hung on to win 7-6. David Mathis picked up the win, his third on the season, while Ryan Haynes closed out the game with 2 hitless and scoreless innings to earn his first save. Gary Borndholdt led the offense going 3-5, 2 runs, RBI. Damian Yupari had his best game of the season with a 2-3, 2 runs, RBI performance. Ryan Haynes also had his best offensive game with a 2-4, 1 run performance.
The Jags open league play on Tuesday, April 29th against the Mount Vernon Majors at home.
