Jags lose to Washington & Lee

Taken from InsideNOVA newspaper, article written by Dave Facinoli:

With a nine-hit attack and a strong pitching performance from sophomore right-hander Teddy Herbert, the Washington-Lee Generals did enough on their own to defeat the host Falls Church Jaguars last night.

In their 11-1 five-inning win, the Generals (4-1) also received a good bit of help as Falls Church (2-4) had a bad defensive game. The Jaguars walked seven batters, threw five wild pitches, had one balk, one passed ball, made two errors and did not catch a couple of other catchable fly balls during the high school baseball outing.

For Falls Church, Nick Santos and Kevin Moore had hits.

“We have a ways to go but we will get there,” first-year Falls Church coach Frank Werman said. “We have talent. It’s a matter of getting it going on the field. When we get behind we can’t play our game and we are still figuring out our pitching. We’ve had 11 guys pitch so far.”

Werman is trying to rebuild a program that has suffered years of consistent losing.

Falls Church, which likes to hit and run and play small ball a lot, has defeated Hayfield, 12-6, and Mount Vernon, 8-2, this season. Hayfield defeated Washington-Lee.

“We are capable,” Werman said. “We just have to avoid the multiple mistakes.”
