Clutch Free Throws Win It for Falls Church Freshmen
Erin Poplin hit the second of two free throws with less than 30 seconds left to give Falls Church a 13-11 lead. Katie Ngo then stole the ball on the ensuing inbounds, making a lay-up to seal the 15-11 victory over Edison.
Falls Church (5-3) won their second game over Edison in a week, and their third out of four. Despite, sloppy play early on, the Jaguars jumped out to a 9-6 halftime lead, backed by solid defense.
“As we have come to expect, defense made the difference in this game for us,” said Head Coach Sharon Frank. “We had a rough shooting night, which isn’t surprising due to the lack of practice, but our defense created our offense.”
Throughout the game, Falls Church was able to keep the Edison offense in check, frequently batting away inbounds passes and causing turnovers. In addition, the Jaguars were aided by clutch free throw shooting, going 5-14 from the line.
“You hear all the time about college teams who win games from the line, and by getting key stops late in the game,” said Assistant Coach Daniel Frank. “I think it’s a testament to our growth as a team, that we were able to do these things effectively.”
Kimberly Roxbrough led the way for with a game-high 6 points, 2-4 from the line and 2 blocks. Katie Ngo added 4 points while Claire Joseph had 3 for Falls Church, who next faces Mt. Vernon on Tuesday at 4:00. The Jaguars look for the season sweep of the Majors, as they won the first meeting 30-5 on January 13th.
