Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Lee-Varsity Doubleheader

Game Date
Jan 13, 2017
Score
JAGUARS: 42
LEE-VARSITY DOUBLEHEADER: 30

Coach Pritchett and her team began their first winning streak of the season by winning their second conference game this week, clawing their way to a comfortable win over the Lady Lancers at Lee HS. This was the fourth straight victory enjoyed by the Lady Jags over Lee in the past eleven months and was achieved over an offense that showed no punch until too late in the contest.

For the second straight game, Falls Church scored first and never gave up their lead. Coach Pritchett shortened her bench to six players tonight, all of them tallying points. Sierra Kennard continued to be sizzling hot by opening the scoring with two "3s" and a two pointer, giving her 43 points in 48 minutes of court time (6 quarters) over the past three games. Rasha Benhamida and Leah Shaw completed Falls Church's first quarter scoring, building a 13-4 lead by the time the buzzer ended the frame.

The Lady Lancers could only muster seven more points over the next two quarters while Falls Church more than doubled them, primarily with multiple baskets by Rasha Benhamida and Mia Pendleton, as well as a "3" from Leah Shaw. The Jags took a safe 29-11 lead into the fourth quarter but Lee attempted to mount a comeback early in the quarter by doubling their total for three quarters in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter. Amari Faust and Sierra Kennard put an end to that short-lived Lee dream with Faust following her missed shot, grabbing her rebound and laying it in. Kennard landed her third "3" of the contest, keeping the Lady Lancers at bay. The other four Lady Jags who played tonight also scored in the final quarter, giving the Jags their third Conference 13 win against two losses at this point with their sixth overall victory of the season.

The "Three Machine" for Falls Church was not particularly efficient tonight, but they got the job done by meeting their game average of four shots beyond the arc this game--continuing their conference dominance with 52 three pointers after thirteen games this season. Free throws remained efficient for the Jags as they struck pay dirt 9 times out of 12 attempts this evening raise their season average close to 65% for the team. Most impressive was the 2-3 zone defense, a lineup which frustrated Lee shooters time and time again, inducing the Lady Lancers to make several passing errors and poor shot attempts.

The victory secures Falls Church in the middle of the conference standing. The next two games will determine if the Lady Jags stay their or ascend toward the Conference 13 hierarchy.

Scoring summary:  Sierra Kennard, 13 points; Rasha Benhamida, 12 points; Leah Shaw, 7 points; Mia Pendleton, 5 points; Nyeisha Thompson, 3 points; Amari Faust, 2 points.
