Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Stuart-Varsity Doubleheader

Game Date
Jan 10, 2017
Score
JAGUARS: 55
STUART-VARSITY DOUBLEHEADER: 32

The last time that Falls Church's girls basketball team lost to Stuart's was in 2009 -- at that time all the current players from both teams were in elementary school. This evening the Lady Jags continued their successful streak over the Lady Raiders with a solid victory at Stuart High School to even its conference record at 2-2.

Falls Church took an early first quarter lead and never relinquished it. A 10-6 first quarter lead swelled to a 27-16 halftime lead, and then a 38-20 lead by the close of the third quarter. Six Lady Jags lit the scoreboard throughout, demonstrating strong and unselfish team play with several assisted shots, patient perimeter passing, heady rebounds, and noticeably fewer turnovers than detected in previous games. Moreover, the Jags pounced upon numerous Lady Raider turnovers and other Stuart errors to convert them into Falls Church points.

Stuart made a run midway into the final quarter to close the gap to 12, rousing their fans with the hope of a miraculous comeback. Those hopes were dashed by eight rapid-fire points by Falls Church: a bucket by Amari Faust, a rarely seen triplet free-throw conversion by Leah Shaw who was fouled on an attempted 3-pointer, and then Sierra Kennard's third "3" of the game. Kennard has proven to be Stuart's nightmare. Not only did she enjoy her first 20+ point game of her sophomore season this evening, she also tallied her third game in the 20s against Stuart in the four times she has played against them over the past two years. Also noteworthy this evening was the ubiquitous play of Mia Pendleton; she aided the green shirts with numerous steals and rebounds and a few assists to compliment her three baskets and perfect scoring from the penalty stripe.

Notching her fifth victory of the season, Coach Pritchett will attempt to continue a conference winning streak against Lee HS in three days.

Scoring Summary: Sierra Kennard; 23 points; Mia Pendleton, 8 points; Leah Shaw, 8 points; Rasha Benhamida, 7 points; Amari Faust, 7 points; Nyeisha Thompson, 2 points.
