Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Half-Way Point Facts and Figures

HALF-WAY POINT FACTS AND FIGURES: 0

After 11 games played, the Falls Church Lady Jaguars prowl in fourth place in Conference 13 with a 1-2 record against conference opponents and a 4-7 overall record. This is the halfway point of the 2016-2017 season (not including regionals, should the team progress into this tournament later in February). While their four wins is well off the mark of last year's team at this point, it should be noted that less than a handful of FCHS girls basketball teams since the year 2000 have had at least as many victories after 11 games.

Ironically, this year's team has scored 457 points and given up 457 points after the first eleven games. This equates to an average game score of 41-41. Defensively, the points allowed ranks within the top three Lady Jaguar teams of this century, including last year's school-record defense which gave up only one fewer point per game at this point of the 2015-2016 season. Coach Pritchett's zone defense has kept this year's team within striking distance in all but one game thus far. The defense will have to stiffen  even more with at least half of their remaining regular season games against high-scoring offenses.

Although this year's team is scoring nearly nine points per game below last season's school-record offense at an equal point of the season, only one other Lady Jaguar team (2006-2007) enjoyed a more potent offense than the current squad over the past ten years. They have eclipsed 40 points in more than half of their games this year and will need to continue this template in order to compete against Conference 13 opponents for the remainder of the season. Most noteworthy is that the Lady Jaguar "Three Machine" dominates the conference as it did last year with 44 baskets made from beyond the arc thus far this season (at least a dozen more than any other team in the conference). This year's team is more efficient at the penalty stripe than any other Lady Jag team in recent memory with 60% of their free throws converted into points (105 made foul shots out of 176 attempts).

Statistics from other teams within Conference 13 are oftentimes incomplete. Regardless, several Falls Church players stack up well against their opponents. The following categories highlight Lady Jaguar players who rank high within the Conference 13 hierarchy at the halfway point:

Points Scored/Points per Game: Sierra Kennard ranks within the top five players in Conference 13, averaging 12 points per game (she has played in eight of the eleven games this season). Leah Shaw leads the team in total points scored with 111 (she has played in all eleven games), ranking her 6th in the conference in this category. Kennard and Rasha Benhamida also rank among the top twelve players in a conference of over 80 players in total points scored with each of them likely to eclipse 100 in the next game.

3-Pointers: Sierra Kennard has 18 "3s" and Leah Shaw has 17 of them, ranking these two Lady Jaguars at #2 and #3 in the conference. Each of them has landed at least one three pointer in all but one game in which they have played thus far this season. Rasha Benhamida's six "3s" also place her within the Top Ten in Conference 13 for this category.

Rebounds: Leah Shaw has 62 recorded rebounds after only eleven games. Although few teams have made this statistic available, Shaw's tally easily ranks her within the top five players within the conference.

Blocked Shots:  Leah Shaw likely ranks within the top 3-5 players in the conference  with 16 recorded  blocks thus far this season.

Top Rookie: Amari Faust is currently the fourth highest scoring freshman in Conference 13; averaging nearly six points per game. Only three known past Falls Church freshman have been more prolific in the past 15 years after an equal number of career launching games.
