Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Eastern-Tip Off Tournament

Game Date
Dec 3, 2016
Score
JAGUARS: 51
EASTERN-TIP OFF TOURNAMENT: 16

Falls Church celebrated victory for the first time this very young season by dominating the Lady Ramblers of Eastern High School in each team's second and final game of the Tip-Off Tournament held at Stuart HS. With a safe and early lead, Coach Pritchett was able to give every player dressed for this game significant court time and her players responded in all aspects of the game.

The Lady Jaguar guards set the winning tone early in this contest. For the second straight game, freshman Amari Faust scored in the opening seconds with two points, but it was Falls Church's vaunted "Three Machine" which essentially put the game out reach by the end of the first quarter as four of them fell through from three different players, including Katie Ngo with her first one of her varsity career. Rasha Benhamida was hot early and often, landing four baskets in the first frame, including her first "3" of the season, and Sierra Kennard knocked down two more "3s". The quarter ended with Falls Church up 21-1.

Eastern could not buy a basket until the final minute of the second quarter while the Lady Jags compiled 11 more points. The centers got into the scoring as juniors Kim Roxborough and Nyeisha Thompson each landed their first 2-pointers of the season. Amari Faust drained her first "3" of her varsity career in that quarter. The lead grew beyond 30 points by the end of the third quarter as Rasha Benhamida and Leah Shaw swished in a 2-pointer each, while Sierra Kennard landed three more baskets in that frame. Kennard's fourth "3" of the game came early in the fourth quarter. Nyeisha Thompson put the icing on the cake with her own three-point play, a basket-and-one conversion. The contest ended with a 35-point victory.

The Lady Jags limited the Ramblers to four total baskets and twice as many free throws; the teen total in points one of the lowest ever yielded by a Falls Church team. Offensively, the Jaguars rolled on with baskets made from seemingly every spot on the floor. The post players banked in a handful of shots while the point guards -- particularly Benhamida -- not only scored frequently this afternoon, but set up their teammates with clean passes for open looks.Seven more "3s" resulted from decent set-up plays. Sierra Kennard matched her previous game output in points and in "3s" with the sophomore's fourth career game of four of those prized shots from beyond the arc. The top returning scorer from last season for all of Conference 13, Kennard is already living up to her billing by the Washington Post as one of the top two players in the entire conference.

Scoring Summary: Sierra Kennard, 18 points; Rasha Benhamida, 11 points; Amari Faust, 8 points; Nyeisha Thompson, 7 points; Katie Ngo, 3 points; Leah Shaw, 2 points; Kim Roxborough, 2 points.
