Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Wakefield HS

Game Date
Feb 3, 2015
Score
JAGUARS: 31
WAKEFIELD HS: 48

The Lady Warriors tamed the Jaguars at Falls Church HS in a slow-starting contest for both teams. Although Coach Pritchett's squad improved in rebounding, too many missed baskets, turnovers, and costly fouls made the difference in the end.

The lackluster bug bit both sides of the court for the first eight minutes as the quarter closed with only one field goal by Wakefield and seven free throws split up by both teams. Falls Church finally landed their first three field goals in the second quarter, each made By senior Natalie Samaha, junior Amber Ecelbarger, and freshman Leah Shaw. The Lady Warriors opened up a lead by doubling the Jaguar points in the quarter and heading to the locker room up 20-11 at the half. They doubled up again on Falls Church in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. In an effort to keep the Jaguars in the game, Ecelbarger swished and banked three baskets for the quarter while Samaha struck paydirt with her second field goal of the game .

Starters on both sides went into the fourth quarter exchanging baskets and free throws, joined later by substitutes; together, ten different players scored in that final 8-minute frame. For Falls Church, Leah Shaw landed her 12th "3" of the season, Meg Verhagen landed her third basket of the season and Amber Ecelbarger drove in two more shots, extending her double-digit streak to six games (she now has 13 games of ten or more points out of 19 played this season). Wakefield walked away from this one with a comfortable win secured early in the second half. For Falls Church, their sluggish start thankfully disappeared as the offense seemed to become livelier as the game wore on, shooting three-fold more in the final ten minutes than they did in the first ten minutes.

If they shoot with that frequency to start the last three games of the regular season and maintain the shot frequency throughout these upcoming contests, the Lady Jaguars have a decent chance to end the season ranked in the middle of the conference. If they don't shoot more (and convert a higher percentage of those opportunities), they will be fighting to stay away from the bottom of the standings.

Scoring Summary:  Amber Ecelbarger, 14 points; Natalie Samaha, 6 points; Leah Shaw, 6 points; Leann Loch, 3 points; Meg Verhagen, 2 points.
