Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Washington-Lee HS

Game Date
Dec 12, 2014
Score
JAGUARS: 43
WASHINGTON-LEE HS: 36

The Lady Jags celebrated victory for the first time this season with a hard-fought contest against the Lady General at Washington-Lee High School. Falls Church opened with a flurry of points by Amber Ecelbarger, who landed a "3", a twisting two-point shot from the right, a driving basket from the left and some free throws. Leah Shaw continued her seemingly automatic first-quarter basket as the freshman swished in her fourth one in as many games with a 3-pointer. Falls Church ended the first quarter leading by three.

Coach Pritchett's tough zone defense shut down the Lady Generals in the second quarter by holding them to two baskets. This allowed the Lady Jags to build on their lead. Ecelbarger sunk a left-handed layup and Senior forward Natalie Samaha contributed two baskets from the post to send the Jaguars to the locker room up by six. One quarter later found the lead still holding at a handful as the two teams traded nearly equal points.

The Lady Generals opened the final quarter with 8  unanswered points, including two "3"s, to take their first lead of the night. Ecelbarger landed her second three-pointer to take the lead back, but less than a minute later Washington-Lee answered with their fifth "3" of the game and led again. Back from a preseason injury and playing in her first game of the season, junior forward and co-captain Leann Loch took two passes near the free-throw line and deftly maneuvered to drive in two lay-ups to steal the lead back to the Lady Jags. Fellow forward Samaha added her fifth basket of the night and Leah Shaw landed her second "3", followed by a nifty pass to Ecelbarger on a two-on-one fast break which the point guard converted for the final points of the night. Senior guard Amy Rock stole the ball to end the General's closing-minute comeback bid and sealed a victory to savor.

Most of the problems suffered by the offense for the first three games of the season disappeared tonight as the Jags landed five "3"s which nearly doubled their output of the previous games combined. The two Falls Church freshmen were major contributors tonight as Shaw totaled seven rebounds in addition to her two "3"s and Mia Pendleton scored a three-pointer of her own. Natalie Samaha marked her career high scoring game in her second varsity year, and Ecelbarger enjoyed her most efficient shooting night of her career and now has managed to score in twelve consecutive quarters.

Scoring Summary: Amber Ecelbarger, 19 points; Natalie Samaha, 10 points; Leah Shaw, 6 points; Leann Loch and Mia Pendleton, 4 points each.
