Girls Varsity Basketball vs. West Potomac-Raider Tip Off Tournament

Game Date
Dec 6, 2014
Score
JAGUARS: 23
WEST POTOMAC-RAIDER TIP OFF TOURNAMENT: 46

Falls Church took it on the chin for the second time in as many games this season, falling to the Lady Wolverines of West Potomac by a doubled score. Although the score was reminiscent of the game played two days earlier, the overall team play proved more promising. It was clear at the opening jump that Coach Pritchett and her staff had prepared her team to play with a spirit not seen in their opening loss.

The Lady Jags began the first quarter enthusiastic and inspired, opening the contest with the first basket and adding to a lead by better shot selection on offense and stifling zone coverage on defense. Senior forward Natalie Samaha overcame three six-foot defenders to put the first points on the board  while freshman Leah Shaw quickly followed by landing a shot in her second consecutive Varsity game. Point Guard Amber Ecelbarger made an immediate impact with two steals, a floor-wrestling jump ball, and two first quarter baskets -- including her second "3" in as many games. The buzzer revealed the team effort paid off with a 9-3 Jaguar lead against a surprised opponent.

West Potomac rectified their offensive problems beginning in the opening minute of the second quarter and throughout the second half, utilizing their tall post players in the frontcourt and their sharp-shooting guards on the perimeter to score 14-15 points per quarter for the final 3 frames. Although attempting to maintain their first-quarter intensity, the Lady Jags' point production plummeted for the rest of the game. Only two girls on Falls Church netted baskets the rest of the way. Junior Forward Micaela Ortiz landed two fourth-quarter shots for her first points of the season, while Ecelbarger remained the only consistent and effective offensive weapon. The Junior captain maneuvered adeptly through clamp-down coverage to score in every quarter with drives and jumpers.

The Lady Jags need to rebound quickly from oh-for-the-tournament as they are scheduled to play 5 games in 11 days, including three games against former National Conference opponents and two games against current Conference 13 foes.

Scoring Summary: Amber Ecelbarger, 14 points, MiCaela Ortiz, 4 points; Natalie Samaha, 3 points; and Leah Shaw, 2 points.
